Turn off WiFi automatically when you leave home

If you want your phone to stay charged longer than usual, you need to do several steps. Whether you're using an Android phone or an iPhone, there are plenty of ways to help extend your phone's battery life. You must either activate the flight mode or the "power saving" mode, and there are a set of tips that must be adhered to in order to achieve an effective result. One such tip that we always repeat is to disable your Wi-Fi connection when you don't need it. In this article, we explain a way to turn off WiFi automatically when you leave the house so as not to let the phone keep searching for nearby networks, which leads to a significant drain on the battery.

Currently, when a phone is connected to a Wi-Fi network, it stays connected as long as it is within range of the network's radio waves. Once out of this range, which is what happens when you leave the house, the connection to the router is lost, but the Wi-Fi feature remains on in the phone, looking for any other network to connect to, whether it is a saved network or a public Wi-Fi network. But to make the battery last longer when you're out and about, disable the Wi-Fi when you leave the house.

Automatically disable WiFi on Samsung phones

Android phones generally do not have a feature that automatically turns off Wi-Fi when GPS detects that you have left the house. However, in this explanation, we will rely on effective ways to do this task. Samsung phones have a great feature called Bixby Routines — one of the most powerful features in Samsung phones ever! Through it, you can create important shortcuts that greatly facilitate your life.

You can access the Bixby Routines feature on Samsung phones by opening “Settings” and then going to the “Advanced Features” section, and there you will find the “Bixby Routines” option, so click on it. But if you do not find this option, your phone may not support the feature due to using an old Android version or using the One UI Core interface. Here you can try downloading the Bixby Routines application independently and installing it by downloading the APK file on your phone, but we do not guarantee the success of this The way to get the feature is compulsory.

In general, on the Bixby Routines screen, make sure to select the Add Routine section of the bar at the bottom to set up a new Shortcut routine from scratch. Here you will first click on the plus sign (+) in the “If” section, then choose from the “Location” menu to then locate your home on the map, and you can use the scroll bar at the top to select the range from which once you exit the phone knows that you have left the house and disconnects Wi-Fi, finally make sure that the "When I leave" option is enabled, then click "Done" at the bottom.

Now we specify the action that takes place when leaving the house, so in the second part, “Then”, after pressing the plus sign (+), go to the “Connections” section, choose “Wi-Fi” from the list, then do the “Disabled” option as shown in the image attached above, and press "Done".

You can then review the shortcut actions. In addition to disabling the Wi-Fi, you can press the plus sign in the “then” section again and add any actions that you think are important to perform when you leave the house. After completion, click Next, specify a name for the routine and its icon, and press Done to save and activate the routine. From now on, as soon as the phone detects that you have gone out of the range you specified around your home, it will automatically disable Wi-Fi, or vice versa, and Wi-Fi will be activated immediately upon your arrival home.

Not all Android phones include a feature similar to Bixby Routines, so if you are using an Android phone from Oppo, Xiaomi, or any other brand, you will need to download an external application to replace it, such as the free Automate application, which is easy to use and able to perform a huge number of tasks automatically, such as disabling Wi-Fi when you leave the house.

To do this, all you have to do after launching the application is to click on the menu button (☰) in the upper left corner, then choose Community, then press the search icon in the upper right corner and type “iHome” and when the name of the shortcut appears in the search results, press it and then download it By clicking on "DOWNLOAD".

After downloading the shortcut, go back to the main screen of the app where you should see the name of the shortcut “iHome” listed among the other options, tap on it and enable all the permissions it needs under the “Privileges” section such as allowing the shortcut to access GPS location data and giving it permission to always work in the background . After you are done, press the "START" button and confirm the launch of the shortcut by pressing again on "START".

A window will then appear asking you to locate your home on the map, do so and press "OK". That is all there is to it! Next time you leave your home, Automate will automatically disable WiFi. When you come home, the WiFi will also be turned on automatically.

As is the case with Android phones, the iOS system on the iPhone does not include an option that allows Wi-Fi to be turned off automatically when you leave the house, so in this method we will rely on the Shortcuts application, which is pre-installed on all iPhone phones, in order to create a shortcut that does this. After launching the Shortcuts application, go to the “Automation” section, then click on “Create Personal Automation”, and from the list that appears, click on “Leave”.

On the next screen, locate your home on the map, or click on the “Current Location” option if you are already taking steps from home, so that the place is determined automatically. Then press Done and then Next. Now we need to set the action to perform when we leave the house, so tap on Add Action and a new menu will appear where we can choose from a large number of actions, now use the search bar above to find the action called Set Wi-Fi Next, make sure the action says "Turn off Wi-Fi" and press Next.

On the next screen, review the selected actions and tap Done to save the shortcut. You can then create another shortcut to reverse the command, that is, turn on the Wi-Fi when you get home, as shown in the attached image.
