How to save some space on your Android phone
But, what do you do when there is no space left on your device? How do you get extra space?
In this report, we try to explain some of the steps that helped you get more storage space on your Android phone without deleting everything.
Transfer photos and videos from internal storage
Photos and videos take up an insane amount of space, so frequently taking photos and videos reduces storage space significantly.
If your phone has a slot for a microSD card, add one and adjust the phone to store this media on the microSD.
If your device does not support a microSD, or you do not want to use it, there is a Google Photos app that can solve the problem. You can back up all important memories and they can be accessed from any device where you are logged into your Google account.
Download and install the app on your phone, launch it and go to Settings, then Backup and sync. Make sure you back up your media, and include any important folders like WhatsApp or Snapchat folders.
When everything is done backing up, in Google Photos go to Settings and free up space. Follow the onscreen messages to delete local copies of the media and see how much storage you'll free up.
Delete unwanted apps and games and their data
Sometimes, Android phone users think that they have deleted all the junk files that they installed through Google Play, and all they have done is to scan their home screen for unused apps and delete the ones they find there. Even worse, sometimes they just delete the shortcut icon, and the app is still installed on the phone.
The best way to discover unused apps and games is to visit the Apps menu in Settings.
If you take a look at Settings and then Apps, you'll see a list of everything that's installed on your device and how much space each app or game takes up. If you don't use a certain app regularly, uninstall it, and you can always download and install it next time you need it.
Apps will also take up more space when you use them. If you tap on an individual app in Settings > Apps, you will see the option to clear data. If you are using Android 6.0 Marshmallow or later, you have to tap Storage in your chosen app.
If you click clear data, it will reset the app. However, you may have to re-enter your password afterwards, and you may lose your progress if the chosen app is a game. Then again, sometimes your data is backed up separately. If you're signed into your Google Account via Google Play Games, for example, you should save your game progress, and in either case, verify first.
Clear cache for apps
Something you can clear without any risk is the cache. For apps you don't use frequently, this is space worth clearing.
You can do this individually for each app via Settings > Apps > Select the app > Clear cache. There is also an option that allows you to delete all your cached data at once in Settings > Storage. Just click delete after clicking on cached data.
Delete WhatsApp media
It's easy enough to prevent WhatsApp from automatically downloading photos and videos to your phone. However, did you know that it also stores any media you send through the service?
It is unlikely that you will be able to view these files from the Gallery, so instead open the file browser app and go to Internal Storage > WhatsApp > Media. You can also check other folders in Media, such as WhatsApp Video.
You might be surprised at what you find, so delete what you don't need, including any duplicates already backed up in Google Photos.
Transfer data to Google Drive
You can take advantage of the cloud storage tools from Google. Although your document files will take up a lot less space (unless you have a lot of them, or a lot of PDFs), all of them can be moved to Google Drive. As with photos, this will create a useful backup and make those files accessible to any device connected to your account online.
Delete downloads
Everyone always forgets about downloads, which are often left behind in a forgotten folder long after they've been used. If you don't have a file browser app on your device, you can download a free app from Google Play. Now find your downloads folder and get rid of anything you don't need.
Delete old messages
You should also check your messages and delete anything unimportant, especially if it has an attachment. Most devices will also give you the option to delete old messages automatically. For example, on a Samsung phone, open the Messages app, tap More > Settings > More settings and make sure that Delete old messages is selected.
Monitor music and podcast downloads
Google Play Music gives you two options when it comes to storing audio on your device. You can manually choose which albums and songs to download or upload, or you can let the app make these decisions for you. Either way, music lovers may end up taking a large amount of their device's storage space by their favorite artists.
To accurately check how much space Play Music has reserved for tunes and podcasts, tap the three-line menu button in the upper-left corner of the screen, then tap Settings > Manage Downloads. To clear a downloaded song or audio file from local storage, click the button next to the name of the download you want to delete.
You can do the same with Spotify or your streaming app of choice. The process is a little different, but each app lets you find and delete anything you've downloaded.
